Manages, supervises, and evaluates the technical services within the Miller.

  1. Manages the Library’s Technical Services unit that includes cataloging, book /serial acquisitions, and electronic resources. Develops workflow for Technical Services operations. Collaborates with System Librarian to assure timely discovery and access to information resources in all formats.
  2. Manages, reviews and tracks expenditures in Technical Services fund accounts for information resources (book/serial acquisitions, Government Documents, databases, curriculum materials, archives/special collections, multimedia/electronic resources), equipment, and supplies Compiles, prepares, and maintains budget invoices and records.
  3. Establishes relationships with vendors and oversees ordering, licensing, encumbrances, and budget. Provides leadership in the management and procurement of electronic resources. Works with vendors to maintain accounts, orders, and processing instructions. Sets up trials and obtains pricing and licensing information for review by the library management team.
  4. Follows University and state mandated guidelines for the acquisition and withdrawal/disposal of library materials, such as serials, books, maps, microfilm, and library media.
  5. Collaborates with the library team to ensure that the quality of Technical Services operations meet the bibliographic and access needs of the culturally diverse patrons and library stakeholders.
  6. Regularly participates in Reference Desk shifts by providing general and specialized reference assistance to library patrons. Serves as an expert resource for Technical Services.
  7. Participates in library and WNMU committees. Assists in the occasional planning and implementing of successful Special Events program hosted by the Miller Library.
  8. Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.

  1. Job Knowledge: Knowledge of library acquisitions for serial subscriptions and government documents. Knowledge of general bookkeeping and budget management principles and practices. Knowledge of library circulation principles and practices. Knowledge of advanced word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software applications. Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of library science, cataloging and classification systems. Knowledge of standard cataloging and classification tools for descriptive cataloging, including rules of description (AACR2, LCSH, and RDA), classification and subject headings. Proficiency in searching OCLC database, identifying MARC bibliographic and authority records of high quality, importing, and modifying MARC records. Comfortable in performing repetitive tasks that require attention to detail. Skill in providing instruction in research methods and library resources. Skills in customer service principles and practices. Skill in working in an environment subject to constant interruptions, frequent exposure to contagious and infectious diseases, and frequently changing priorities. Skill in following oral and written instructions. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with university staff, faculty, students, community patrons, and other library personnel. Skill in maintaining confidential records and files. Must be knowledgeable of University policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.
  2. Working Conditions/Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations): Normal library environment. May be required to lift normal office equipment, books, and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.

Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of library experience required. Master’s degree in Library Science or related field with 2 years of experience preferred.  Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Western New Mexico University is a state funded University. As such, all position are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.
