Responsible for the coordination, implementation, development, collaboration, and daily operations of the Outdoor and Bicycle programs.

 

 

  1. Assists the growth and development of a comprehensive outdoor recreation program that includes curricular, co-curricular, and assessment components that enhance the learning experience at Western New Mexico University.
  2. Manages and supervises the overall operations of a broad range of outdoor programs to include the outdoor program, bicycle assembly and repair technician program, the outdoor equipment rental program, freshman outdoor orientation and student training programs.
  3. Develops, implements, and adjusts the program structure including a budget, policy/procedures, reports, assessment, and publicity for the following programs:  Outdoor Program, Equipment Rental, Freshman Orientation, and the bicycle technician program. Recommend changes that will enhance programs.
  4. Responsible for planning and oversight of co-curricular outdoor trips to include developing, implementing, assessing, and maintaining best practices, risk management and environmental stewardship for these trips. Interface with students and other campus constituencies on logistical planning and implementation. Lead trips as appropriate
  5. Assists with new student outdoor orientation programming (OOP), to include student training and supervision. Maintains records and documentation of all trips for assessment and risk management purposes. Develop manuals, trainings, and workshops, including a comprehensive staff training program and training modules.
  6. Maintains relationships with multiple off-campus entities and intern sites to develop appropriate internship projects and working knowledge of the mission, goals, and liabilities of WNMU to gauge appropriateness of possible partnerships. Establishes and maintains working relationships throughout the university community and maintain external relationships with the public.
  7. Manages the daily operations of The Outpost (university gear rental facility open to the public) and maintain regular business hours.
  8. Responsible for inventory and maintenance of inventory and program equipment.
  9. Assist in coordinating logistics on and off campus for certification courses including Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid, CPR, and others.
  10. Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.

  1. Job Knowledge: Knowledgeable in logistics, best practices, business management, student supervision, and leading others in outdoor and backcountry settings. Ability to lead small and large groups of students. Ability to work with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff.  Knowledge and experience working in diverse university settings. Experience with group international travel, business management, specific experience in outdoor program coordination and campus freshmen orientation programs. Experience with Outward Bound, the National Outdoor Leadership School, the Wilderness Education Association, a college/university outdoor program or similar. Ability to teach with a nationally recognized certification such as AMGA Single Pitch Instructor, ACA, LNT, Swiftwater Rescue are desirable. Must be knowledgeable of University policies and procedures, and state and federal laws and regulations that apply to University processes. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community.
  2. Working Conditions/Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations): Normal office, recreation classroom, and outdoor and forest environments. Requires physical work, lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects over 50 pounds. Ability to handle outdoor conditions for a majority of the work of time. Ability to move around campus and outdoor settings.  Ability to work flexible hours to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Required to travel for trips. Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, climb, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs, steps, hills, mountains, etc. Must be able to visually and auditory assess situations to insure health and safety. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting or walking. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.

Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Education, Adventure Education, Recreation, or related field with 4 years of related experience required.  Master’s degree Outdoor Education, Adventure Education, Recreation, or related field with 2 years of experience preferred. Leave-No-Trace certification and/or training.  Course work related to outdoor education, environmental education and outdoor administration are highly desirable. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Western New Mexico University is a state funded University. As such, all position are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.

a. New Mexico Driver’s License
b. Must pass a Defensive Driving Course within 2 months of hire date.
c. Must hold Wilderness First Responder certification, or equivalent, or be able to secure certification within 2 months from hire.
