The Early Childhood Programs is looking for staff for a variety of positions for the Fall Semester. If you are intersted in any of these position please complete the application process.

Teacher Assistant: Assists in provision of daily classroom teaching and preparation activities of the Early Childhood Programs in compliance with established state and national accreditation standards. This position is a full time defer pay position with benefits. This position pays $26,040 for academic year with deferred pay through summer. This position is benefit elegible.

Duties:

  1. Assists Early Childhood Teacher implement daily educational and activity plans for students in accordance with established lesson plan.
  2. Assists facilitating small group interactive sessions. Implements age-appropriate guidance as needed and appropriate for management of safe and educationally conducive classroom environment.
  3. Reviews upcoming lesson plan, prepares all classroom materials in support of lessons goals and objectives.
  4. Adhere to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment.
  5. Assists in the supervision of the classroom and playground activities, assists and supervise meals, snacks, and refreshments to children. Cleans and organizes classroom areas, toys, and equipment. Assists teachers prepare for classroom activities. Escorts, assists, and instructs children regarding personal hygiene practices. Makes copies and cuts out project materials.
  6. Participates in a variety of department and staff meetings for discussion of issues, concerns, and programs requirements.
  7. Performs all necessary sanitizing and hygiene care both routinely and as needed for young children.
  8. Documents and completes student records. Helps to maintain student portfolios and files. Participates in regular parent conferences to discuss progress and developmental assessments. Participates in pre-semester home visits of enrolled students.
  9. Prepares newsletters. Participates in monthly fire and/or emergency drills and procedures.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: High School diploma or GED equivalent or current Child Development Associate (CDA) Certification while currently working towards an Associate’s in Early Childhood Education or related field and experience equivalent with young children. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Instructional Assistant: Assists in provision of daily classroom activities of the Early Childhood Programs in compliance with established state and national accreditation standards. This position pays $15.00 per hour.

Duties:

  1. Escorts, assists, and instructs children regarding personal hygiene practices.
  2. Assists and supervises playground activities.
  3. Assists plan and supervise meals, snacks, and refreshments to children.
  4. Cleans and organizes classroom areas, toys and equipment. Performs all necessary sanitizing and hygiene care both routinely and as needed for young children. 
  5. Assists teachers to prepare for classroom activities.
  6. Makes copies and prepares project materials.
  7. Participates in a variety of department and staff meetings for discussion of concerns and program requirements. 
  8. Adheres to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: High School diploma or GED. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Substitute: Assists in provision of daily classroom activities of the Early Childhood Programs in compliance with established state and national accreditation standards. Substitute Teachers are on-call to fill the roles and responsibilities temporarily for Lead Teachers, Assistant Teachers, Instructional Assistants, or Cooks. Duties may change depending on the role assigned. This position pays $15.00 per hour.

Duties:

  1. Assists children to wash their hands when entering class, after bathroom and meal times.
  2. Assists children in self-select activities.
  3. Helps with diaper changes as needed, supervises bathrooms, or supervises the class.
  4. Assists with breakfast set up including but not limited to putting placemats, food on tables, helping child find seat, putting on bibs, washing hands and helping children serve food.
  5. Sits and assists supervise meal time. Refills bowls and pitchers when needed.
  6. Assists with cleanup after meals including but not limited to cleaning tables, dishes, placemats, wiping chairs, and sweeping floors. Wiping infants and toddlers faces with clean washcloths.
  7. Assists children to get ready to go outside.
  8. Helps supervise playground interacting with children while walking around.
  9. Helps with nap time including but not limited to calming, settling and rocking, monitor nappers by sight and sound throughout the napping time. Organize shelves and pick up toys quietly during nap time. Help put away and set up cots for nap.
  10. Aids in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all children.
  11. Adheres to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements: High School diploma or GED.  Must be at least 18 years old or older. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

  1. Job Knowledge: Knowledge of age-appropriate activities, interests and behaviors. Knowledge of proper handling procedures for food. Knowledge of the principles and practices for emergent curriculum development specific to early childhood education. Ability to implement the vision, mission, and philosophy of the Early Childhood Programs. Knowledge of curriculums and principles, practices and techniques for development of lesson plans specific to early childhood education. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with young children, staff and parents. Skill in working effectively in an environment subject to noise, frequent exposure to contagious diseases, interruptions and quickly changing priorities. Skill in quickly responding to dynamic situations utilizing effective communication and appropriate intervention methods to maintain classroom management. Skill in working with young children to help them complete activities and remain focused on assigned activities. Skill in working on an individual basis with children with special needs. Skills in guiding classroom assistants to ensure appropriate classroom management.
  2. Working Conditions/Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations): Normal classroom environment. May be required to lift, push, and pull office equipment and materials. Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps. Must be able to visually and auditory assess situations to ensure health and safety. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Light maintenance such as shoveling, sweeping, mopping, throwing trash, and others may be needed. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.

Western New Mexico University is a state funded University. As such, all position are dependent on state appropriations and available funding sources.

Certification in First Aid/CPR is required.
